Story books and other books for my children
Stories have become a mean to calm the children down before they sleep, a tool to boost their creativity, a motivation drive to get them into the habit of reading as well as my teaching aid to get them to behave.
Every night, before they close their eyes, there is always a story session. Each of my children gets to choose one story and there are always some values in it that they learn.
Help me be good stories
I tell them a variety of stories from fairy tales to real life stories, not forgetting some stories of my own creation.
Let’s take an example of my little daughter who refuses to buckle up while in the car months ago. My maid was sitting with her and persuading her, telling her to tie the seat belt but only to get a “NO” in return. So, what did I do? I told her a story of my own creation.
The story goes like this:
Once upon a time, there was a little girl name Mary. Mary doesn’t like to buckle up when she’s in the car. Her daddy and mummy keep telling her that it is important to buckle up but she just won’t listen. So, one day, daddy and mummy brought Mary out. They were going to Jusco by car and daddy was driving very fast. Suddenly, daddy had to brake his car because a car came out suddenly from one corner. Mary flew out of the window because she did not tie her seat belt and mummy gave out a loud cry. Daddy stopped his car and mummy ran out crying “Mary, Mary”. She was in tears. Mary was badly injured and was sent to the hospital. In the end, Mary regretted and promised daddy and mummy that she would buckle up every time she sits in the car.
After hearing it, my little girl quickly reached for her seat belt.
Stories from Scholastic and some others
There are many more stories which I create for my children to make them behave. They seem to learn better from stories instead of me saying: “Don’t do this and don’t do that.”
Stories from Walt Disney
The only problem is that when they say: “Mummy, can we have the story about Jane?” I would go: “Err…Which Jane?” Forgetful mummy has mixed all the names up and does not know who is in which story. Sign of getting old, isn’t it?

Some lucky kids you have there. It's a great way to bond! They will remember it for years to come. :)
I still remember the stories my parents told me as a kid, those times we shared is the most cherished treasure in my heart.
Aidan loves reading stories. I will read him the story then he reads it to me.

Hi Jo-n. reading how you tell stories get your kids do things really cute.
Our time no human rights...it was a thigh raising pinch or a smack if we don't do as requested, ha ha.
My mom I remember had one of those deadly Clint Eastwood kind of, 'go ahead my my day' kind of stare,...good enough to make us behave, ha ha.
And she was faster than Clint Eastwood on the draw....only her's was a 3 feet long rattan cane, "ouch"!
Ha ha, Lee.

when my girl tells me she want to listen to a song, or a certain scene from from a certain part of her song CD or DVD, it makes me go crazy too....how to remember which CD wor...
My son now always want me to read a bedtime story. Sometimes, I wonder why I started the practice, especially all I want to do is to go and sleep myself rather than reading all those kiddy stories. Aiya, the sacrifices of being a mom!!
Your kids' books are so neatly arranged. My kids' books are scattered everywhere in the house *malu*
it's always easy to say for me...i know it's good to enforce reading into kids but really actually doing it is always not easy!! some more i dislike reading myself... sigh!!
