Has your child been frequently shaking his head or blinking his eyes or twitching his cheek or even twitching his fingers? Karl has been shaking his head as in saying NO for about a month. At first, I thought it was a bad habit because I remembered Wayne blinking his eyes very frequently too.
When I first saw Karl shaking his head, I kept asking him to stop shaking but it didn’t work. Then, I remembered Wayne’s teacher telling me not to mention about Wayne’s blinking. According to her, the more we mention, the more we remind him to blink. As that approach worked well on Wayne, I used that approach on Karl, hoping that his head shaking would stop but it didn’t stop.
After a month, I told myself that I should not wait any longer and I should bring Karl to the doctor. We ended up in the clinic for a string of tests. The doctor said it’s either a TIC or a FIT.
Now, a TIC means a repetitive movement of muscles (Click on the link to see full description of TIC) and it will disappear after some time. A FIT would be more serious and it means a minor seizure (Click on the link to see full description of seizure).
Seeing the doctor executing the tests on Karl makes my heart pound very quickly. I was so afraid that it would be a FIT instead of a TIC. After all the tests, the doctor told me that it is most probably a TIC and told me that I should observe Karl and if in anytime it gets more serious, I should bring Karl to the clinic for further checkup.
I think it should be a TIC because as of today, I don’t see Karl shake his head that often. Please, oh please, let it be only a TIC!

I pray for you too that it is only a TIC...
my youngest daughter also blink her eyes almost every second for a bout two weeks. When she was 1 1/2 years old.I was wondering why she had this habit.I was really scared at that time till i wanna bring her to see doc.Try to observe them and see where they learn from.I found out that my cousin keep blinking her eyes to my daughter..from there she learn it..then i scold my daughter to stop it or else i don't want her..from there she stop blinking her eyes immdeidatly.if we don't stop this habit..later it's hard for them to stop it.
I hope it is just a tic too. My nephew has habits of flapping his hands and the doctors said to ignore it and it'll stop. It worked.
dont worry so much lar...i pray that it will only be a TIC. :)
He will be fine!! Don't worry!! We all here pray for you and your boy!!
thanks for you information
i hope it is just a tic. actually, i am worrying too as my little baby has this problem as well.
when my boys were 2 years old, they had FIT too during fever with very high temperature but when the temp is mild, it won't happen. trust me, seeing FIT with yr own eyes can be real frightening....
so, if karl didn't suffer any illness, i doubt there's FIT....i think u can count of the dr.'s advice that it is just TIC!
we all pray for you thou...when will the results be out? keep us update!
good luck!
Hope all will be well for your son. Keep a close eye on him and do take care.
Pray that it is only a TIC. I remember in my school days, there was a teacher who keeps shaking her head as well, I wonder if that's a TIC? At that age, wouldn't that has gone off, as per your description? Hopefully it is not the case for your child, and with early treatment it would go off soon...
Is he conscious when he is doing that? If you ask him a question when he is twitching his fingers to check if he is conscious. If he is, I don't think it is a fit.
LB,
Thank you so much.
Sweetiepie,
Ya, we got to stop them or it will be stuck there forever.
Tammy,
Thanks for sharing Tammy.
Miche,
Thank you Miche.
Moonlady,
Thank you. I hope he'll be fine soon.
Huisia,
You are welcome. You should observe and see how it goes. If it gets worse, consult the doctor.
Jacss,
I know how you feel when you saw the fit. It's worrying, huh?
Audrey,
Thanks and I will watch over him.
Suzette,
If it didn't go off, it might be a fit which is a minor seizure. That's why I hope Karl's is not that.
Michelle,
Thanks for the tip.
how often does he shake his head? like all the time?? hope it's just a habit he'll stop doin it very soon.
don't worry too much, i'm sure it's not FIT.
hope it's nothing serious ya..
It could be just a habit due to nervousness. During my school days, I had a classmate who used to blink her eyes and shake her head and sometimes grind her teeth. That lasted for many years until her secondary school years. Over the years, the habit gradually waned. Now, I hardly see her doing this habit.
I hope and pray for you it is only a TIC. :)
Don't worry, Jo-n. Everything will be fine. Seems like nowadays many children do have bad habit(s).Will pray for you too!
i will pray for you too!! no worry..
Leena,
Very frequent actually but it's getting less now.
Siew Ting,
Ya, hope so.
Shireen,
I think you have a point there. I notice that whenever I ask him to read a Chinese book with words that he doesn't know well, he tend to shake his head.
Jas, Yenny, Chooi Peng,
Thank you for your prayers.
Lets hope is only a TIC!
God bless him, hope its only a TIC
habit is very hard to stop, just like my son's nail biting habit
oh oh, i don't know that children got this head shaking problem too, I saw the same case in some adults. Hope Karl will be ok soon.
Hopefully it is just a TIC. Kids nowadays have all this bad habit. Don't worry too much, hopefully it will go away.
Kelly,
Ya, hope so.
Wen,
Ian still can't stop his habit?
Martini,
They do have many bad habits.
