Nowadays, many parents would complain about their children being too active. These children are full of energy and just cannot sit still. Is there anything wrong with these children? ABSOLUTELY NOT! They are just another type of learner called the Kinaesthetic Learner.
I have attended a workshop on teaching skill, a great workshop conducted by an ex-lecturer of UM (one of the local universities in Malaysia) and have read the “Parenthink” magazine about an interesting topic called the multiple intelligences.
I quote from “Parenthink Magazine”, October issue:
“Howard Gardner talked about multiple intelligences which gave a definition of human nature in a cognitive perspective and he said that humans develop the most when their intelligences are discovered and promoted.”
Gardner’s model of the seven multiple intelligences at a glance:
Intelligence Type --------- Capability and perception
Linguistic -------------------- Words and language
Logical-Mathematical ------- Logic and numbers
Musical ---------------------- Music, sound, rhythm
Bodily-Kinaesthetic ---------- Body movement control
Spatial-Visual --------------- Images and space
Interpersonal --------------- Other people’s feelings
Intrapersonal --------------- Self-awareness
Often, when people see children who like to run, jump and touch everything, they would shake their heads and say that these children are naughty. When you think further, are these children really that bad? I really don’t think so. They are just not the quiet type who can sit in front of the television for hours without turning their heads and they are just not the type who would turn left when you say left. These children are often the smart children who want to explore and learn more and they are the ones who have a mind of their own and want their voice to be heard.
If we force these children to sit still and read or write, do you think they are happy? Happy children learn best! So, when they are not happy, reading and writing become a waste of time as nothing will go into their head. It doesn’t mean that these children will never learn how to read and write but it rather means that these children need other learning methods to produce results. There are many fun ways to promote learning. For me, I like to try different learning methods and make the lessons fun. I want to see my children enjoy while learning and I want them to pick up faster and remember better. (I will share with you some fun learning methods in my subsequent posts. Do remember to read about it.)
So, have you analyzed your children? Which group does your child belong to? When you get the answer, maybe you would learn how to say yes to certain things that you said no previously.

My 2 gals fall in the body-kinaesthetic group. They just can't sit still and touch everything though they know these things are forbidden!
My daughter is a teenager so I think she may be too old to fall into a category, but my toddler is definitely the body one.
Can't say. My toddler seems to have a little of everything at this stage. Perhaps as he grows older, I'll have a better idea.
My Jo is fit enough to be in the body-kinaesthetic group. :)
well jo, u would have guess my answer....hehe, if not the body-kinaesthetic type, what else would they be??
anyway, since i know these r traits of intelligence, i shall remind myself d next time i 'try' to stop them from exploring their 'intelligence'....hehehe, thanks!!
Hi, your post is really inspire me in parenting. My boy is the body one and girl..I am not sure. She likes to watch what people are doing. She talks very...adult!! Because she will say first I do this.. then I do that.. in the end I can have my treat. She is 3...
However, both of them are 120% behave outside and turn into the evils in the house.
Moonlady... yes same with me they turn my house like a zoo.but i know , active kids is a good kids. They will learn a lots of thing thru their activities....
this is pretty good. i have to monitor to my children to see where their strengths lie in. it's important too for their future in planning which road they will be going for, right?
Jo-N, I am here.. for good and for bad heehehe.. I remember you when I am in trouble doesn't mean that I don't visit here when I am happy! :-) I love to learn from your posts..
and today I got this lesson: Happy children learn best! Clay is linguistic because he can learn English and mandarin so easily.. he is also logical as he is trained to do KUMON everyday and love to read science books.
He is also good at rhythm.. if he is not lazy he can play piano well.
Do we have to teach and train that interpersonal dan intrapersonal perception so our children can have that capability?
I will keep in mind that make my children happy learning...
Hi Jo-n--my daughter has a little calm and a little energy. But when she was very little, we taught her how to use her curiosity and energy so that she could explore and touch without breaking things or hurting herself.
Being energetic is good, but helping a child focus it so that it's useful to the child may be helpful (smile).
Thank you for this thoughtful post!
Shireen,
Good that you know so much about your girls and you can plan activities that brings out their potential. Anyway, I think you have been doing a good job and I kind of like your teaching methods.
Tammy,
Even your teenage girl has multiple intelligences and she will shine if she use it properly.
Aud,
We are all supposed to have more than one but there is one core that stands out more than others.
Huisia,
That's a good one.
Jacss,
I think it's best we explore with our kids to create bonding and to know what they are up to.
Moonlady,
Thanks for visiting my blog. I appreciate your thoughts. Mine are angels in the school and devil at home too. It's quite normal, I think. So, your girl sounds mature and that's good.
Yatie,
Yes. Let your children be active but teach them their limits too. I think it's important that we chanel their energy into something beneficial.
Gargies,
You are so right. We should monitor them and most importantly do not force them into doing something they don't like in future. There are many eg. where people are noy happy with their job. That's sad!
Trin,
I know I can count on you. Thank you for being here for me.
So, Clay is Jack of All Trades. It's good. I always like children like that. There will be one intelligence that is stronger than the others. You have to find out and enhance that. Sometimes, it's difficult to identify. I too, can't really identify which is the core for my kids.
I think our kids should have some interpersonal and intrapersonal skills for his or her own good but that can't be forced.
Hi TNP,
There is truth in your words. When a child has lots of energy, we should guide him or her to use the energy in a good way rather than to use it to create trouble or to disturb others. Thank you for sharing TNP. I always learn a lot from you.
Hi Jo-n--you are always kind with your words and I love what you're doing here (smile)!
Can i borrow the magazine>>
my little one also another active fella, learn words very fast... and outgoing too! From the beginning I don't think this is bad. I'm actually plan to sign her up for martial art or dance class to burn her extra energy in the future. hehehe....
TNP,
Thanks for your support. I always look forward to your visit.
Kelly,
Sure. I will bring it this saturday.
Peridot&Saphire,
I think martial arts and dance are excellent activities. I myself have benefited form both these activities when I was young.
Nice post! I am still not sure which group does my girl belongs to. But I strongly believe that learning should be happy task. They will only learn things when they are happy! :)
Jas,
Kids love fun, don't they?
I think XY has a little of the linguistic n musical type, apart from bodily-kinaesthetic. I've been wanting to send her for a dance class, but jes nvr got to it. Must really send her for a trial class one of these days.
Ginnie,
I think a dance class would be good for children. I would very much love to send my girl for one if I'm able to find one which suits her.
hi thanks for pinging me to read this.
