Licking

This post is about Wayne again. He is the middle child and the most difficult child to deal with.

One day, he was watching a television program and he was licking his hands and legs. I don’t know why and how on earth he gets that habit but I know I have to do something to stop that. I told him to stop several times but he didn’t obey. So, I came out with this:

Me: Everybody, mummy is going to buy lollipops and only Karl and Nyn will get the lollipop. Wayne will not get one.

Wayne: Why mummy? I want a lollipop too.

Me: You want a lollipop? I thought your hands and legs taste better. You like to lick your hands and legs more than the lollipop, right?

Wayne: No, I like to lick the lollipop.

Me: Oh, I see. So, which do you want now?

Wayne: Lollipop.

Me: So, you got to stop licking your hands and legs. If you lick your hands and legs, your action is telling me that you like to lick your hands and legs and so, I don’t have to buy a lollipop for you because you found something to lick.

Wayne: I want lollipop, I want lollipop. (Stops licking)

I think I am a crazy mom!! I don't know when the licking habit will return but I hope it will not.

Two of my nephews went through a faze where they would chew on the sleeve of their shirts. They don't do it anymore. Maybe it is just a habit they had to out grow.

I agree with tammy.. just a matter of when they will grow out of the habit :-)

Perhaps he saw a dog or cat doing this? I know my daughter has done this before when she was pretending to be one of our dogs, lol.

Do you also explain to him why his licking habit is non approval? My girl has the habit of biting fingers, biting things too, we will explain to her about germs , bacterias and such, bring out the human body books and start drilling... I guess by repeating doing so, it will make sense to her

That sure is a great way!! I want a lollipop too ... :-)

Haha. Not crazy. Good tactic what. I use it all the time. Give them only two choices. You want lollipop or leg. He's sure to choose lollipop unless the leg really does taste better. LoL!

Tammy & Siew Ting,

I really hope he would out grow this habit.

Chinnee,

How to relax? He sips up a lot of my energy!!!

Vegan Momma,

Maybe you are right. My children like role play and that include animals too.

Michelle,

NO, off course not! Actually it's not a bribe, I just want to tell him that the tongue is for licking food, not other things.

Chooi Peng,

That's why I say I'm crazy.

Jacss,

It's not bribing but telling him that if he wants to lick, he should go for food and not lick other things. No, this is not the workshop update. I'm still waiting for the photos to be sent to me by my friend so that I can write on the workshop. Hold on ya?

Elaine,

I do explain but only after this conversation cos I have tried only explaination and they don't listen. Too lengthy an explanation becomes nagging. That's why I come out with surprises or say things that he least expect, to make him stop and listen.

LB,

Here, here, here's your lollipop!

Mumsgather,

You use that too? Give me five! Hey, I have not visited your blog I think. Thanks for dropping by. Do drop by more often. I will visit you too.

pretty clever way to get him to stop licking! i hope he grows out of it. :D

JO-N said...

Jess,

I have to agree to that but it's not the best way. I just want him to know the use of his tongue.

Menchie,

Ya, I hope so too.

No.. I don't think you are a crazy mummy!!! It's a good tatic! Don't worry, I believe it will work. My girl does the licking on and off too... She is acting like a cat licking my face... but when I say I will lick her back, she will stop. hehehe

he'll grow out of it! all kids go through really strange phases...that just happens to be one that a lot of kids go through. it's so gross, but, they outgrow it! promise!

Hi! I'm tagging you with a meme.

Jas,

I hope it works :)

Melissa,

Thanks for the reassuring words.

Tammy,

Will check it out.

Sweetiepie,

They do give us lots of surprises and headaches too.

I think opal/vegan momma said is right because my kids sometime do copy from animal like cat. They even use to copy how the animal eat. They lick my face too.

I think he will outgrow it one day. My toddler sucks his thumb ever since he was a baby but now I see that it is slowly decreasing. I guess as they grow, they automatically stops certain behavior.

Jesslyn said...

I think this only short term..no worry lar.

My elder girl still such her thumb ler, wean off last time but now come back again! ..haihhh

This is funny, what a funny habit Wyane has LOL! And you handled him well.

Jo-N I wonder why you always have a wisdom to teach and make your children obey you! I think you have a very gentle heart... *adore Joanne*

I pray I can have a gentle heart, 50% from yours is quite good for me.. hehehe..

JO-N said...

Yatie,

Kids do imitate animals especially the ones they like, ya? I think that's possible.

Audrey,

Ya, I think that's just a phase they have to go through, but not everybody.

Jess,

Thank you, thank you. I hope what you say will come true.

Joe,

Hahaha. Hopefully it's the right tactic.

Chanel,

Hope so.

Ginnie,

He will ask when he feel like eating but he knows very well that if I say No, he has to accept. Sometimes, his wants become very strong desire and would cry or throw tantrum. He is really not easy to handle.

Shireen,

Sometimes I don't know why he has all these bad habits. Sigh!

Trin,

Your words are so kind. My children don't obey me all the time, you know? Sometimes, I get very angry too but I have learnt to control my anger better than last time. When you keep calm, you can think of a solution better.

Wen said...

u r not alone, ian bites them too!!! i shall try ur method tomorrow..

JO-N said...

Wen,

Let me know whether it works. Thanks.

Wen said...

i tried this method wit ian when he was licking and biting his toes, so i told him abt the lollipop, and guess what he said to me? "Lollipop is round, my feet is not", kena ja dou from him la!!

JO-N said...

Wen,

Ian is so fast in answering you. You can use this method to tell him that his mouth is for licking food, not feet. That's the main point. It doesn't matter if the approach doesn't suit Ian. You can think of another approach.

I agree with most of your points, however some need to be discussed further, I will hold a small talk with my partners and maybe I will look for you some suggestion shortly.
