In my previous post, I touched on children taking for granted and do not know how to appreciate what they have.
During one of the sessions in Sunday School, I was assigned to present this topic to the children. I showed them a piece of white paper with a black dot:

“What do you see?” I asked the children. Many said: “I see a black dot.” There were no other answers. Then, one said: “I see some red marks.” and one said: “I see some fine lines.”

“What do you see?” I asked the children. Many said: “I see a black dot.” There were no other answers. Then, one said: “I see some red marks.” and one said: “I see some fine lines.”
“What about this white area?” I asked while pointing to the white area. “Nobody seems to notice this because your focus is on the black dot.” Then I continued: “In life, the black dot symbolizes something bad that happens to you while the white area symbolizes something good. We always look at the bad side of things and complain a lot and make ourselves unhappy. However, we forget that there are many nice things around us that we should be happy for. For example, you would blame your parents for not allowing you to do certain things or buy certain things. “Why mummy always says NO?” but what we often forget is Mummy says lots of YES but we choose to remember the NO instead of the YES. So, start remembering the nice and good things and make yourself happy.
I tried this on my children but I used simpler words with lots of examples, examples of when I said YES and when I said NO. They kind of catch what I say but not 100%. I am going to do it again to reinforce this concept.

You are really a good teacher.. Although your children cannot 100% understand your philosophy, I can !!

Jo-N, it happens in adult as well. Recently, I was also having a bad times with my family. Still trying to look at the white page than the black dot. :)
Hi Jo-N, pls check out a tag 4u. Thx!
Dora:)
Good teaching idea. Let me try this on my kids and see if they grasp the picture or not. Thanks for sharing!
JO-N I finally published my 3 tags in 1!!
Sorry it took me soo long!
Also you left me a comment this weekend, and I didn't understand it!
sei lor, i see the black dot only wor!!! mayb cause i just had a big war with my bro
That is interesting. I wonder how the kids might respond to a black page with a white dot?
Very enlightening! Adults need to be reminded of the white, and not just the black dots!
very good post. :)

LiLi,
Relax and keep calm. You can overcome it and be ok again. Hope you are feeling better now.
Dora,
Ok. Will check out soon :)

Sabinem,
I'll check it out. Thanks :)
Wen,
How are you feeling now? Hope everything has been settled.
Jerry,
Interesting thoughts! Never tried that before but it would also mean that people who encounter misfortune always will appreciate when something nice comes their way.
LB,
Thanks for visiting my blog. Ya, that's for adults too.
Huisia,
My parents are teachers but I'm not. Very stressful to be one.
Trin,
Thanks for the compliment. I think we are all great teachers when it comes to children especially when you love children.
By the way, I'm not a christian Trin.
Pam,
Really? Thanks.
ooh...teacher Jo-N, mumy here also learnt/reminded somethg from you today & i'll definitely try this on my kids one day!!
u r such a creative thinker!!
U r so right.. we must look at things on the bright side. That's a positive attitude.
good idea, but can we use for 2-3 years old kid
Jaccs,
You make me blush!
Ginnie,
Not easy, eh? What to do, happy = positive. Have to make a choice.
Yatie,
You can use simpler language with lots of examples for 2-3 year old kids. My daughter is 2+ and I use this method on her as well.
Good analogy. I'll see if Tee can grasp the concept failing which I'll save it for next year. *smile*
that's a good thing to teach the kids. thanks for sharing. i'm goin to see how shern respond to this.
Big Pumpkin & Shern's Mom,
Let me know whether Tee and Shern could grasp the idea. You can modify the explanation to suit your child.
That's the good point. I'm going to try it on my little baby when she grows up. :)
Chris Bay,
Is this your name? Hope you can still remember this when your little baby grows up :) If you can't, you can dig it up from my blog :)
this is really good tips ;)
