Fungates System

This post is written specially for Wen, who is anxious about choosing a suitable kindy for Ian. Both my sons are studying in a fungates kindy and my little girl will be joining her brother next year. So, what I am going to write is my own experience and opinion.

My eldest went to a Montessori kindy for 2 years before I switched him to a fungates kindy. I always find Montessori system wonderful but my son, Karl, was very reluctant to go to school everyday. The teachers told me that Karl was very timid in school and didn't know how to converse in Bahasa Melayu and didn't know his ABC, which I found very strange as he's totally different at home. My neighbour also experienced that with her daughter. When I first sent him to the fungates kindy, he settled down the very first day and looked forward to go to school everyday. That's a relief for me!

My second son, Wayne, took a longer time to settle down. I left him with his teacher the very first day and he would cry the whole day until he fell asleep. That's normal as every child experiences separation anxiety and the best thing a parent could do is to leave their children to the teacher after some reassurance that you will come and pick him up. That's how Wayne became famous and became an example whenever the teachers explain to the new parents: "We have a boy who cries everyday when he first came to school and now he doesn't want to go home when his mummy comes to pick him up."

I find fungates system very practical and fun! Yes, the syllabus is a little difficult compared to the other pre-schools but the teachers use a fun approach to teach the children and the children love it! So, why worry about the syllabus when your child enjoy learning it? I think you would agree with me that children pick up fast!

Fungates uses open concept which means there is no closed classroom for the students. This is to train them to concentrate on what they are doing without being disturbed by others. Some parents may not like it but I find this a good training for my kids. Because of the short attention span, the students will move from one "room" to another (eg: from the class to the music room or the computer room or the gym).

Here's the set of fun cards for year 3 children. It's called the cereal fun and the raisin fun. Children gets to put cereal on the number according to how it is written. For example: For number one, children get to put cereal from top to bottom so that in future, they know how to write number one which is from top to bottom. They will learn number 1 to 10 and alphabets A-Z.

There are various types of apparatus in a fungates kindy and usually they come in 2 per set which is the teachers' set and the children's set. For example, when the teachers teach numbers, they would pick up 1 tile and say: "This is one". The children will then follow by picking up their own tile. Then, the teacher would point to another thing and say: "This is one, one butterfly, this is also one, one flower". The purpose is to teach them quantity, not the numerals.

I love their phonics especially the blends and the silent sound like "sake" pronounced as "sak" with "e" being the silent sound.

What about a science lab in a pre-school? Isn't it fun to carry out experiments to learn something? The children even get to use a microscope! My son loves this session. They learn so many things like how to test whether an egg is good or bad.

There are also thematic learning. The children learn themes like "Animals", "Festivals", "Kitchen", etc. The interesting part is these are so REAL that the children are able to catch up fast. For example: When the teachers teach "Kitchen", the children would be brought to the pantry and the teacher would show them the real pots and pans and the children even get to prepare some simple food and eat it. When the teachers teach "Beach", the children would wear swimming costumes and get to play sand with shovels and pails and even build sand castles. When the teacher teach "Animals", the children get to visit a mini zoo (prepared using toy animals).

Chinese? This is also a criteria when I choose a kindy. My children are English speaking and they are going to a Chinese primary school. Karl and Wayne knew nothing about Chinese but now they can recognize and write some Chinese words. Wayne (4 years old) would go: "Mama, ni kan, tian shang de tian!" (Telling me to look at the sky). The stroke of a word is also important in Chinese language and the fungates ensure that your child learn the correct strokes.

Every friday, my kids would be looking forward to go to school for "Power Fun", a fun activity where the teachers and children will act together in a role play. They would play some games and the winning team gets something.

As for homework, don't worry too much about it. Year 3 children have no homework. Year 4 children do their homework only twice a week whereas year 5 and year 6 children have homework which is manageble (2-3 per day).

Having said that, parents should also consider the management and teachers of the pre-school when choosing one. Choose one which suits you and your child as different people have different needs.

I won't worry about the syllabus being too deep, children are more capable than we think. But, the approach is important. The "open concept" is actually Montessori, but most Montessori schools in Malaysia do not adopt it.

I am sending you a tag, mind sharing?

Leah,

While I find both fungates and montessori good, it's hard to find a kindy which is truly montessori around my area. Sad, isn't it?

I will do the tag. Thanks.

I think once a system becomes popular, ppl just say their are 'montesorri' or 'fungate' just to get students, but wonder how many schools are genuine 'montesorri' or 'fungate'.

I wonder if I can find a fungate near my plc. Do you know if there's a directory to find one?

I found a montessorri school and thinking of sending Zara there, but many ppl have been telling me to try fungate.

Zara's mama,

I have sent you an email regarding this.

Jo-N, I'm keen on knowing more about this fungate kindy also. Do you mind sending me a link or tel me where to search for a one near my place?
Thanks...

Where are you staying Kerry? I'll find out for you.

I heard of fungate but never going into details with it. Thanks for the info.

During our time, where got Fungate or Montessori? And we still survive. Is society putting more pressure on children?

I like montessori. Prob they can't use this method here fully coz it doesnt suit into our education system. In fact, to me fun learning is the most important for their early years.

I heard many positive feedbacks on the Fungates system. Too bad there is no kindy using this syllabus near our house.

Thank you very much Jo-N....

Jo-N,

Muak Muak!! U helped understand fungate more before i get the chance to speak to the principals. Now i think i would just hv to visit the school to see. It sounds fun and that is the kind of school which i like Ian to attend. What worries me is that the school is a. Eng med and i am afraid that their mandarin is not sufficient for Ian to cope in chinese school. I would like to hv both, afraid that Ian might slack in his eng too. so prob i will send Ian to bao bei. anyway, i got the numbers for fungate around Pj and will check it out this week. sick of visiting so many kindy edi

JO-N said...

Michelle,
You're right. We still survive!

Chinnee,
Go for what you think suits you and QiQi best.

Shireen,
Really no fungates kindy there? Where are you staying?

Kerry,
I will get back to you.

Wen,

Don't worry. I myself don't know chinese until I went to a chinese primary school cos my parents are Eng.ed. Now, I can speak, read and write chinese. Even scored a C3 in my SRP.

Fungates' chinese foundation is strong but you have to pump in a little extra at home. That's what I am doing with my son now. I have talked to a few mothers whose children were from fungates and now studying in a chinese school. I get positive feedbacks that their children are doing fine, off course not the best in chinese but they can cope.

So, it all depends on your expectation. To me, I want my children to be able to speak, read and write chinese. They don't have to score A for chinese. As long as they don't fail chinese, I am happy. For me, I want my kids to have a strong Eng. and Malay base first so that I don't have to worry about that when they are in primary school.

6 years of chinese medium is really sufficient for the children to learn chinese language.

Think about it and all the best to you.

Fungates sounds like fun... a lot of hands-on. Can they take back the fun cards? XY attends a Montessori kindy and all the materials n apparatus r oni used in schl. She can oni bring back books.

Well written on fungates system..I wouldn't be able to write as good as you....

However, not all Fungates kindy uses the system fully..I cannot deny that some Fungate kindy is not fun at all...

Reg the query you posted in my blog on the GD method of flashing cards to kids, I feel there's no fixed or correct method of flashing the cards to them. You can use any method to show the cards to your kids as long as they love it.

My girls dont really look at the cards when I flash to them. So I hang the cards everywhere in the house and room - and I find this method works best for them.

My girls also find plain words cards boring. They love BITS and homemade books.

You can visit my blog and go to the label 'Learning and Resources' to see some of the methods I teach my gals.

JO-N said...

Slavemom,

The children can take back the ABC and 123 cards by the end of the year but not the apparatus.

Chanel,

Really? All the time I thought fungates franchise is strict. I love what you write too.

JO-N said...

Shireen,

Thanks for the advice. I'll try it out and definitely will visit your blog again.

TNP,

It's my pleasure. I like what you write very much.

Jo-N, Ian has short attention span and since fungate system is an open concept, wont the kids interrupt other classes meh? if so, how are they gonna learn since teachers have to 'grab' them back from somewhere else. would they be able to pay attention to listen to teachers while other classes are learning something else. I think I am okay with the chinese there already and esp after testing the traffic in the morning arounf that area. but now i am having doubts on the open concept, how are? i am really kiasi hor?

JO-N said...

Wen,

Don't worry about the open concept.Think about it this way: When you child is enjoying his lesson with all the apparatus to work on, his focus would be on his lesson and he would have no time to look around him.

In fungates kindy, they make every lesson short due to the short attention span of children. So, they make them move from 1 "class" to another. Children don't sit in their so called "class" for 3 hours.

My children have short attention span too cos they are very active. Imagine my kids who cannot even lie down still during bedtime, have to kick and touch something, have no problem in class. I think Ian should be fine.

But why is my 4yr old daughter so reluctant to go to nursery everyday? She's attending Fungates in PJ.

Faty said...

Jo-n! I just enroled my daughter to fungates playschool. She do enjoy to school and now she is only age 3.

I do have question why nowaday the kindi have all the additional class for english and chinese reading. Is it means the school syallabus is not enough to children? I am not agree to fully occupy all the times of the kids with those additional lesson as i believe it will kill the kids creative of their own life.

Is it fungates school will need all those addtional class. Mind share?

JO-N said...

Hi W_faith,

I have sent you an email with regards to your question and hopefully it reaches you.

Faty,

Thank you for reading. Well, nowadays, kindies are all competing for business. In my opinion, they want to provide extras so that people would enrol their children.

Fungates kindies have full day school system whereby the children finish school at 3pm (I'm not sure about other fungates kindy but the one my kids attend is like this). Basically, I like this full day school because they have role plays, home science (baking and cooking), educational games and homework coaching.

My eldest is in primary one this year and he is attending a chinese primary school. I thank his teachers in fungates for making him like homework. Homework in primary 1 is no joke - there's a lot of homework to be done everyday.

Hope your child benefits from this kindy.

Thanks for your infor, i think u are right all kindi now is business. They have offer a lot additional program for after school (8am - 11.15pm), that mean 11.30 - 3pm. Of course to have additional charges. Is it necessary ? for us and kids. For us really $$$, for kids really pressure! They are only kids! Nowaday the kids is so "cham", read read read! write write write!

Hi Jo-N,

I'm in the process of hunting down a kindie for my 5 year old boy. I was contemplating on sending him to a Q-Dees as that's the nearest one to our home. However, I've been hearing & reading a bit on the fungates method.
Pls advise if there's one in Puchong..i.e Bdr Puteri preferably.

Thank you so much.

I sent my daughter to a kindie using Fungates system....and I am not sure if I made the right choice. My daughter is quite talkative and has short concentration span. And she is being punished by standing in front of the classroom. And I noticed some mistake in their English activities book where X stands for Axe coz the sound is alike. I talked to the teacher and she said that is how it is. I am not sure if this is the right way to educate. I am thinking of changing kindie but have to incur extra cost. Still deliberating.

JO-N said...

Dear Kelly,

Different fungates kindy has different disciplinary system and I guess you can talk to the teachers or principal about the method of punishment.

As for X stands for axe, I think you have misunderstood.

When they says X says "sound of X", X says "sound of X" as in axe, they actually mean the sound, not the starting alphabet of the word.

For eg: A says "sound of A", A says "sound of A" as in apple, "Apple" actually has the starting sound of "sound of A", they don't mean the starting letter, but the sound.

You may want to tell your child that in case she is confused.

Can you understand what I'm trying to say? It's rather confusing when I use words to describe the whole thing. Hopefully you can catch what I am trying to explain.

Kelly said...

Hi JO-N,

But the thing with the sound is that for letters A-W and Y-Z, the picture that represents the sound actually do start with the corresponding alphabet. So this is where I am not sure if I am confused or it is really a mistake. Then next to picture of Axe (sounds like X) are pictures of Box and Fox (so where would the sound like for this words be?). Really appreciate your feedback. And I do find that the expectation to excel on the children is quite high. When I enrolled, I was hoping that it would be a fun experience for her like "FUN"gate but now she is telling me that she doesn't like school.

Just read some your input. Sounds like fun. My son goes to UCSI Child Development Centre and in the beginning, he was also crying. Very quickly, he settled down. He always compliments the food that he eats in the centre, which I am very relieved. The food is without artificial preservatives. The teachers are also very good.

Yeh, my son goes to UCSI Child Development Centre as well. The teachers are very caring and my son reports that the food in the centre is very good. He prefers to eat there. That's what I look for - safety, nutritious food, sound teaching - perfecto...

Open Day coming up on the 11th of Dec. Check it out. Heard there are 3 hours of packed activities including Kindercooking, English and Science. Native English teacher as well.

Hope this page is truly the appropriate page to post this... I merely wanted to just let everyone across the forum who lives in Australia know about a really good top of the range audio visual equipment world wide web site labeled as Ordio. I came across them surprisingly by mistake when I was hunting for Sennheiser Headphone and it just so happened that these guys had the cheapest prices available. Not only that but they are amazingly courteous and even followed up on my transaction to make sure that I was still completely satisfied. They actually buy out sizable inventories of audio visual equipment so that they can seriously break the price down. Absolutely stop by their site if you're scouting for some home electronics.

I had just enrolled my daughter In a fungate kindy. She is going to be 3 years old next year. I was impressed by the system explained by the teacher.
I started sending her 3 days ago, to join their school holidays' classes. Allison cried so badly when I left her alone with the teachers.
I had actually accompanied her 2days, and wasn't really happy with the environment.
Firstly the English language spoken is not good. The teachers are not really children friendly. When I was there, from 9 to 12 pm, I could hear teachers non-stop yelling and beatings. Children are supposed to line up and move around in group, and when they are not concentrating, teachers will just pull them roughly into the line.
I am worry that Allison will think yelling and beatings is right.. Should I change her to another kindy?

Hi, Bird of Paradise, the management and the teachers are as important as the system itself. There are many more fungates kindy around. I know how frustrating it is to see impatient teachers. My opinion is that you may observe the teachers and your child for a few more days and if the problem persist, you may consider searching for another school. All the best to you.
